THE SCARFF FAMILY WILL LEAD THE PARADE AS GRAND MARSHALS!

In 1922 Scarff Ford was born and the Scarff name has been associated with good business in the auto industry, public service and philanthropy. Most recently, the dealership was voted the best dealer in Auburn by Auburn Reporter readers.

Wayland Scarff, founder of the dealership, was instrumental in founding the Rotary Club of Auburn for which Way and Cal have held presidencies.  Bob was president in the Kiwanis Club of Auburn.  Their cumulative support includes the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, the Auburn Symphony, the White River Museum, Pregnancy Aid, the Auburn Food Bank, the Seattle Yacht Club, the Auburn Park Board, the Auburn Good Ol’ Days Festival and the YMCA. They have donated over 17,000 lbs to the Rotary Club’s First Harvest.

There are so many ways that this family has made our community stronger with their kindness and for that, they have earned the honor of Grand Marshal(s) for the Auburn Good Ol’ Days festival for 2008.

Wayland was instrumental in King County Senior Housing development and the progress that proposed the dam that keeps the valley safe from floods to this day.  The “younger” generation was in the consortium that built Crystal Mountain Ski Resort which is a great spot for Northwest Skiers.

From 1922 to 1927 business rolled along. Then there were no cars to sell for a year and a half. Business picked up… until the depression. Bartering became the way to survive in 1931 and 1932.  1939 was a good year. It must have been a great one since it stood out in the sharp mind of Bob, now 91. Pearl Harbor came out of nowhere.  The government froze all car sales. There they sat with inventory and no way to go - or so it appeared.  The resourceful Scarff family decided that they would lease the cars to the government for use by the Air Raid Wardens.  Problem solved, inventory reduced and the success continued.  When asked, “How’s business?” Bob always replied, “Exciting!” No matter what stage of success sales were at, the fact remained that business was definitely exciting!

The Scarff Arcade on Main Street near B St. NE was the home of the first Scarff dealership. It was huge news to move the dealership to the current location (formerly a bulb farm) so far out of town! Now they are the only dealer that is in the downtown area.   The modern “fish bowl” design sparked news and over 10,000 attendees came to the grand opening in 1947.  They did a renovation in the early 70’s and are now undergoing another improvement.  The auto industry is so entrenched in the Auburn culture that our town has more car dealerships than most cities three times our size. The “Little Detroit of the West” was known throughout the land and continues to be simultaneous with the auto industry far beyond its conception year. The Auburn Auto Dealers Association and Radio KASY in Auburn were the force and the voice of the valley.

Congratulations and thank you, Scarff Family, and all that you represent!
